Cairns Regional PD Connects Healthcare Professionals Across Queensland

IHEA Queensland’s Cairns Regional Professional Development Day has been warmly received, bringing together healthcare engineering, facilities and infrastructure professionals from across the state for a day of technical learning, site-based insight and industry connection.

Held on Wednesday 2 September, the event was designed to create a stronger professional development opportunity for members and industry colleagues working outside the major metropolitan centres — and the response demonstrated just how valuable regional engagement can be.

It was particularly encouraging to welcome delegates who had travelled from across Queensland, including South East Queensland, Townsville, North West Queensland and the Torres and Cape region.

Just as importantly, the event attracted strong participation from the local Cairns healthcare and industry community.

This mix of local and visiting delegates was exactly the intention behind hosting a regional PD event: creating opportunities for healthcare professionals to connect with IHEA, share knowledge and build stronger professional networks regardless of where they are based.

Learning From Cairns Hospital

The day began with an opportunity for delegates to step inside Cairns Hospital and gain first-hand insight into the infrastructure and engineering considerations involved in operating and developing a major regional healthcare facility.

The site-based component provided valuable context for the technical discussions that followed and gave attendees an opportunity to connect practical hospital operations with broader themes around project delivery, electrical infrastructure, compliance and reliability.

Practical, Technical and Relevant

The afternoon program at Rydges brought together a diverse group of speakers covering topics directly relevant to healthcare engineering and facilities professionals.

Presentations explored healthcare design and redevelopment, corrosion within healthcare infrastructure, electrical safety and critical power, healthcare electrical compliance, the challenges of delivering electrical works within a live regional hospital, the transition toward all-electric hospitals, and UV technology in healthcare environments.

The breadth of subject matter generated strong discussion throughout the afternoon and provided delegates with a valuable mix of technical expertise, practical experience and real-world examples.

The quality and diversity of the speakers was a highlight of the event, with presentations offering perspectives from consultants, contractors, technical specialists and industry partners.

Strengthening Regional Connections

Perhaps the greatest success of the day was the opportunity to bring people together.

Regional healthcare professionals can face very different operational challenges to their metropolitan counterparts, while also having fewer opportunities to attend face-to-face professional development activities.

Events such as the Cairns Regional PD provide an important opportunity to bridge that gap.

They allow local healthcare teams to access professional development closer to home while creating connections between regions, health services, technical specialists and the broader IHEA community.

The participation of delegates from several Hospital and Health Services across Queensland was a particularly positive outcome and reinforces the value of continuing to explore regional events as part of IHEA’s professional development program.

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees valuing both the technical content and the opportunity to connect with colleagues working across healthcare engineering and infrastructure.
