IHEA members can now access the recording of our recent Western Australian professional development session, “Australian Standards: How and Who Writes the Rules?”
Presented in partnership with Standards Australia, the session featured Ben Russell, Engagement Manager – Health Sector, who provided a valuable look behind the scenes at how Australian Standards are proposed, developed and reviewed.
Ben explained how Standards Australia works with consumers, government, industry representatives and technical experts to ensure standards reflect contemporary knowledge, practical experience and the needs of the sectors they serve.

Who participates in technical committees and how representatives are selected
How healthcare professionals and organisations can contribute their expertise
The relationship between standards, regulation and industry practice
The role standards play in supporting safety, quality, compliance, innovation and operational performance
Opportunities for the healthcare engineering and facilities community to become more involved in standards development
The session also highlighted why active industry participation matters. Those working directly in healthcare engineering, infrastructure, facilities management and project delivery bring practical knowledge that can help ensure standards remain relevant, effective and responsive to the realities of healthcare environments.
