Programmed alongside the AIRAH Indoor Air Quality Conference, this event will bring together healthcare engineering, facilities management and industry professionals for an engaging program of technical presentations, practical insights, industry discussion and networking opportunities.

The day will combine a guided hospital tour, project insights, specialist electrical presentations and informal networking, providing attendees with a valuable opportunity to learn from local expertise and connect with colleagues from across the sector.

Behind the Scenes at Cairns Hospital

The day will begin with a guided tour of the Cairns Hospital helipad and hospital facilities, hosted by Xburo.

Attendees will gain a first-hand perspective on the infrastructure, operational requirements and engineering considerations involved in supporting a major regional healthcare facility.

The tour will provide valuable context for the afternoon program, which will examine redevelopment, electrical safety, critical power systems, compliance and practical lessons from healthcare projects.

Following the morning tour, attendees will have a one-hour break to arrange their own lunch before reconvening at Rydges for the afternoon sessions.

Cairns Hospital Redevelopment with Andy Bradley

Andy Bradley, Founder and Managing Director of Property Buro, will provide an overview of the Cairns Hospital redevelopment project.

An experienced leader in engineering, construction and property, Andy brings extensive technical and strategic expertise to complex, high-stakes projects. His presentation will explore the redevelopment from a practical project and infrastructure perspective, including the challenges, decisions and collaborative approaches involved in delivering healthcare environments.

The session will offer attendees an opportunity to hear directly from a project leader involved in navigating the technical and operational complexities of healthcare redevelopment.

Critical Power and Electrical Reliability with Leo Ward

Leo Ward, Managing Director of Power & Data Support Services, will share insights drawn from 50 years of experience in the electrical industry.

Leo is recognised for his technical knowledge, practical problem-solving and commitment to electrical safety, professional standards and workforce development. His business provides specialist UPS sales, service and repair support across Cairns, Cape York, Mount Isa and the Torres Strait, working with clients in healthcare, defence, government and data centres.

His presentation will consider the importance of critical power infrastructure, electrical system reliability and appropriate monitoring within healthcare facilities.

Hospital electrical safety depends on protecting patients and staff, maintaining uninterrupted power to essential clinical services, meeting legislative and standards requirements, and supporting a proactive culture of inspection, testing and continuous improvement.

Leo’s session will encourage attendees to consider how ageing infrastructure, emergency power systems, preventive maintenance and collaboration between engineering and clinical teams affect safety and operational continuity.

Electricians and Healthcare with George Bettany

George Bettany, Director of Joule Enterprises QLD Pty Ltd, has dedicated more than 50 years to the electrical industry.

As a licensed electrical contractor, George has worked across a broad range of electrical installations, with a particular focus on hospitals and healthcare environments.

He specialises in the inspection, testing, commissioning and auditing of electrical installations within healthcare facilities and has a strong interest in compliance with Australian Standards, particularly AS/NZS 3003 for electrical installations in patient areas.

Throughout his career, George has worked closely with healthcare providers, contractors and facility managers to support safe, compliant and practical electrical outcomes.

In his presentation, “Electricians and Healthcare,” George will draw on five decades of industry experience to discuss the essential role electricians play in maintaining safe, reliable and compliant healthcare facilities.

The session will be particularly relevant to those involved in patient-area installations, certification, commissioning, compliance, maintenance and electrical risk management.
