High-Performance Façade Systems in Cold Climate Healthcare Facilities

Thursday 9 April 2026 | 9:00 AM (AEST)

Locations: Canberra | Melbourne | Sydney (Virtual)

Healthcare facilities operating in extreme climates face unique and complex challenges. In regions where winter temperatures can drop as low as –50°C, the performance of building envelope systems becomes critical — not only for durability and lifecycle cost, but for patient comfort and care outcomes.

Standard façade solutions often struggle under these conditions, leading to accelerated material degradation, increased condensation risk, and higher maintenance demands. As healthcare infrastructure continues to evolve, there is a growing need for smarter, more resilient façade systems that can withstand these environments while supporting clinical outcomes.

A Case Study in Performance and Innovation

In this global webinar, hosted by the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE), Peter Dushenski, Managing Director of GlasCurtain, will present a detailed case study of the Mental Health Unit (MHU) expansion at Whitehorse General Hospital, Canada.

This project demonstrates how intelligent façade design — particularly next-generation glazed curtain wall systems — can significantly enhance building performance in cold climate healthcare settings.

Designing for Resilience, Efficiency and Care

The session will explore how advanced façade technologies, including low-condensation fibreglass-framed curtain wall systems and hygienic integrated blinds, can:

  • Improve thermal performance in extreme environments

  • Reduce condensation risk and associated maintenance issues

  • Extend asset lifespan and lower whole-of-life costs

  • Enhance natural daylighting and internal comfort

  • Support improved patient wellbeing and care outcomes

These solutions offer a scalable and practical approach for healthcare organisations seeking more predictable building performance and long-term operational efficiency.

What You’ll Learn

Attendees will gain practical insights into:

  • Designing façade systems for extreme environmental conditions

  • Improving building envelope performance and durability

  • Reducing lifecycle costs through material selection and design

  • Enhancing patient environments through daylight and comfort

  • Applying innovative materials and passive design strategies

A Global Perspective on Healthcare Design

This webinar forms part of a global IFHE series and will be delivered across multiple time zones to support international participation. Closed captioning will be available in multiple languages.

Joining Peter will be Robin Lucidarme, Director of Energy Solutions at Sustainable Projects Group (SPG), who will provide additional insight into sustainable design strategies and the role of high-performance building envelopes in creating resilient, energy-efficient healthcare facilities.
