Patient-centered Focus in Healthcare Design

Amy Krause and Francis Fenner of the South African Federation of Healthcare Engineering pick some highlights from the 2024 International Federation of Healthcare Engineering Congress, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2024.


The 2024 International Federation of Healthcare Engineering Congress, held in Cape Town, South Africa, marked another milestone in global healthcare Engineering. Hosted by the South African Federation of Healthcare Engineering (SAFHE), the congress welcomed 425 professionals, engineers, architects and policymakers from over 32 countries.   This gathering of diverse expertise aimed to address the most pressing challenges and explore advancements in healthcare facilities, particularly in the context of patient-centred design.


With the theme ‘patient-centred healthcare design’, the congress served as a vibrant platform for dialogue on innovative strategies, sustainable design and the role of emerging technologies in reshaping healthcare environments. Across discussions, panels and workshops, the congress highlighted a collective ambition to transform healthcare facilities to meet new standards of sustainability, resilience and patient-centred care.


The congress opened with a warm welcome from the newly appointed IFHE President Kevin Poggenpoel, setting a tone of unity and forward-thinking leadership. Attendees were welcomed to Africa by storyteller Rob Caskie, who captivated the audience with narratives that showcased Africa’s vibrant spirit and resilience. This was followed by traditional African dances, adding cultural richness to the events beginning.


Dr Paul Soko, an expert with deep experience in healthcare systems and economics, delivered the keynote address. His presentation focused on redesigning clinical service models to meet the evolving challenges faced by South Africa and many other countries. Dr Soko’s insights on healthcare innovations resonated widely, creating a thought-provoking foundation for the congress.
