Dear Friends,
Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge our nation’s collective horror at the events that unfolded in Bondi last Sunday, and the overwhelming grief and raw emotion we all felt at what we witnessed. We stand in solidarity with those who have and continue to be deeply affected by the acts of terror, and our love is poured out to them.
If your end of year is anything like mine, that romantic notion of a graceful transition into the holiday season (for those fortunate enough to have one) is a far cry from reality! Demands from our stakeholders, workplaces and clients are ever increasing, and activity levels are amplified in the lead up to Christmas. Healthcare networks develop and implement best risk-based planning to cater for all those unpredictable health and facility happenings often associated with the silly season.
Notwithstanding the season’s ‘gifts’, it is always valuable to pause and consider how we’ve grown personally, professionally and hopefully organisationally over the year. During 2025, IHEA has endeavoured to provide you and your organisations with the networks and tools to support the ongoing delivery of safe, resilient and future-focused health services. Our committees have worked tirelessly, balancing their work, personal and professional commitments to deliver more for our members. I wish to extend my personal gratitude to each of our branch and board members for the efforts, passion and innovation they continue to bring to the table, year on year.
Our conference in Sydney this year again showcased the depth of expertise within our membership and supplier networks. Bringing together healthcare professionals from across the country over 3 days, the conference created an invaluable forum for exchanging knowledge, sharing lessons and fostering deeper, more meaningful connections. Hosting National Conferences takes substantial effort from our conference convener, committee and conference delivery partner and we thank them for bringing such a great event. Looking forward, I hope to see you at our 2026 IHEA Conference at Seaworld on the Gold Coast from 4-6 March – registrations are open now! It will be an outstanding opportunity to bring your whole family and make a trip of it, so get your booking locked in over the break!
I would also acknowledge the sustained expertise that former IHEA and International Federation of Healthcare Engineering President Darryl Pitcher continues to provide on the global stage, aiding the IFHE during a time of innovation, growth and generational re-shaping. I represented IHEA at the online Council meeting this week and there’s a lot to look forward to in terms of international collaboration in the new year. IHEA continues to play a constructive role in shaping IFHE’s future direction, particularly in advocating for initiatives relevant to our region. In October 2026, IHEA will be represented at the IFHE Council Meeting in New Orleans, to be held alongside the Healthcare Design (HCD) Conference + Expo. This International Conference is expected to be the largest in the organisation’s history, welcoming literally thousands of delegates, sponsors and suppliers.
Throughout the year, we expanded our program of member events, with an increase in both virtual and in-person offerings. Technical webinars, workshops and state-based activities provided accessible opportunities for professional development and connection, regardless of location. The strong levels of participation reflect a highly engaged membership and a clear appetite for ongoing learning and collaboration.
More recently, the board convened to consider a range of strategic priorities for the Institute. These discussions were characterised by thoughtful debate, strong engagement and a shared commitment to ensuring IHEA remains well positioned for the years ahead. I am confident that the experience and dedication of the Board will continue to guide the organisation effectively as we refine our direction and prepare for 2025 and beyond. Among the matters under review is a recalibration of our National Conference schedule, ensuring it continues to deliver maximum value to members.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Institute and for the contribution you make every day to the delivery of safe and effective healthcare infrastructure. Your engagement and professionalism remain the foundation of IHEA’s success.
On behalf of the Institute, I extend my best wishes to you and your families for a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday season. If you’re the one on shift over the holiday period, then please know that your service is appreciated. I look forward to the opportunities and achievements that lie ahead in the coming year, and especially to welcoming you to the Gold Coast in March!
All the best,
Michael Scerri
