IHEA Lunch + Learn – Beyond the Institution: Human-centred approaches to mental health

ree

The Gold Coast Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (GCUH) is setting a new standard for mental health care in Australia through its innovative, human-centred design. Moving beyond the traditional institutional model, the $105 million, 40-bed facility focuses on recovery, dignity, and community connection for individuals with complex mental health needs. Patients may stay for up to 36 months, allowing for extended rehabilitation and development of vital life skills in a supportive environment.

Located on the land of the Yugambeh language-speaking people, the facility’s orientation embraces both the coastal sunrise and hinterland sunset, symbolising hope and renewal. The design incorporates three secure levels, blending subtle security features with therapeutic spaces that maximise access to daylight, nature, and fresh air. Internal courtyards, sensory rooms, and flexible communal areas foster a sense of autonomy, comfort, and privacy.

ARCH, leaders in health facility planning and design, worked closely with the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service and Queensland Health to ensure the space enhances every aspect of the user experience. The interior evokes a residential feel, using warm materials and colour schemes to define zones for arrival, recovery, and assessment. Residents engage in activities such as cooking and performing daily living tasks, building independence for life beyond the unit.

The GCUH Secure Mental Health Unit represents a significant shift toward holistic, person-centred care. Its success and the lessons learned from its creation will be explored at the upcoming IHEA Webinar, highlighting how architecture can transform the mental health journey for both consumers and practitioners.
