The IHEA National Conference 2025 has ended, marking another outstanding year of knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and innovation in the healthcare engineering sector. Held under the timely and forward-thinking theme “Future Proofing Healthcare Building Systems – Getting the Basics Right”, this year’s conference brought together a dynamic mix of professionals, researchers, designers, and decision-makers from across Australia and beyond.

As our healthcare systems face growing complexity, ageing infrastructure, climate threats, and evolving patient needs, the conference provided a critical platform to explore practical solutions, share lessons learned, and spark new ideas. With an engaging program of expert presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, the event reaffirmed the importance of building systems that are not only robust today but resilient enough to adapt to the demands of tomorrow.
Keynote Speaker: Adam Spencer on the ChatGPT Revolution

A major highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Adam Spencer, who delivered an eye-opening and highly engaging session titled 001: How the ChatGPT Revolution is Changing Work and Business Forever. Adam, known for his ability to demystify complex topics, guided the audience through the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence—starting with the fundamentals of GPT technology and extending into its real-world applications across industries.
Adam’s session was both educational and entertaining, leaving attendees not only informed but inspired to explore how these emerging technologies can be applied in their own roles and organisations. It was a fitting keynote for a conference grounded in the idea of future proofing—a reminder that innovation, when paired with insight and action, is our most powerful tool.
Program Highlights
Several presentations stood out for their insight, relevance, and impact. One of the most talked-about sessions came from Patrick Chambers of Stantec, who delivered Anticipating Future Needs in Airborne Infection Control Within Healthcare Facilities. His session delved into how hospital and healthcare facility design must evolve in the post-pandemic era.

Equally well received was Jordan Bartlett from Proactive Design, who presented Resilience: Future Proofing Facilities With an All-Hazard Approach. Jordan explored how healthcare buildings can be designed or retrofitted to withstand a wide spectrum of potential disruptions—from natural disasters to cyberattacks. His emphasis on integrating flexibility, redundancy, and risk assessment early in the design phase struck a chord with attendees grappling with real-world pressures to deliver long-lasting infrastructure solutions.
Best Paper 2025: Harriet Whiley Shines Again
The prestigious Best Paper 2025 award was presented to Dr. Harriet Whiley, who captivated audiences with her winning presentation, New Insights into the Management and Design of Water Systems to Prevent Healthcare Associated Infections. Harriet's research illuminated the often-overlooked intersection between plumbing design and infection control, offering practical recommendations for engineers, facility managers, and infection prevention specialists. Her work not only contributed valuable knowledge but also spurred important conversations on how seemingly minor system design decisions can have life-saving implications.

Notably, this marks Harriet’s second time receiving the Best Paper award, following her acclaimed presentation in Adelaide in 2023. Her continued contributions exemplify the quality and consistency that the IHEA conference seeks to showcase.

Social Events and Networking
While the technical sessions provided rich content, the social events also played a vital role in the overall conference experience. Delegates had the opportunity to unwind and connect during a guided tour of the Maritime Museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into Australia's naval and maritime heritage. The evening concluded with the conference dinner, where guests enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere, good food, and lively conversation. These moments outside the formal program were just as valuable—strengthening professional networks, fostering friendships, and reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the IHEA community.
